How to Style a Red Dress: Shoes, Makeup, Jewellery and Hair

A red dress is confident on its own. Here is how to finish it with the right shoes, makeup, jewellery, bag and hair, with complete looks for every occasion.

A red dress never goes unnoticed, which is exactly why the styling around it matters. Red is already the statement, so your accessories should frame it rather than fight it. Here is how to get every detail right.

Shoes

  • Nude heels: the most elegant option. A shoe close to your skin tone lengthens the leg and lets the red do the talking.
  • Black: classic and slightly dramatic. Black pumps or strappy sandals suit cocktail parties and winter events.
  • Gold or metallic: perfect for evening and festive occasions. Gold warms up the red; silver gives it a cooler, modern edge.
  • Avoid: red shoes in a slightly different shade from the dress. If you go tonal, match exactly or skip it.

Makeup: red lip or soft?

You have two good routes. A red lip matching the undertone of the dress (blue-red with cool reds, orange-red with tomato reds) looks timeless when paired with clean skin, mascara and a fine liner. The soft route is a glowy base, warm bronze or champagne eyeshadow and a nude-rose lip. What to avoid: a strong smoky eye combined with a red lip, which can look heavy next to such a bold colour.

Jewellery: gold or silver?

Gold is the natural partner for warm, tomato and brick reds, and it photographs beautifully. Silver, diamonds and pearls suit cool, blue-based reds like cherry and crimson. Keep it to one focal point: statement earrings with a strapless or V-neck dress, or a fine pendant with a simple neckline. For more on this, see our guide to jewellery by neckline.

Bag

A small clutch in black, nude, gold or silver keeps the look polished. A red bag rarely improves a red dress unless the shades are identical.

Hair and outerwear

Sleek styles feel modern with red: a low bun, a glossy ponytail or Hollywood waves pushed to one side. For colder evenings, a black tailored coat or a camel wrap coat both work beautifully over red.

Complete looks

  • Wedding guest: a red midi dress, nude block heels, gold drop earrings, a soft rose lip and a low bun. Check the dress code first in our wedding guest guide.
  • Gala: a red maxi gown, gold strappy sandals, a classic red lip, diamond-style studs and Hollywood waves.
  • Party: a red mini, black pointed pumps, silver hoops, a metallic clutch and a sleek ponytail.
