How to Style a White or Cream Dress

A white dress feels fresh and special. Here is how to style it with shoes, makeup, jewellery and colour accents, and how to avoid see-through surprises.

White and cream dresses are made for celebrations: summer parties, graduations, birthdays, engagement dinners and civil ceremonies where you are the one getting married. One important note first: do not wear white as a wedding guest unless the couple has asked for it. Read our wedding guest guide for the details.

Shoes

  • Nude: lengthens the leg and keeps the look soft and clean.
  • Gold or champagne: adds a warm, festive glow that suits summer evenings.
  • Colour pop: a bright pair, such as cobalt, fuchsia or lime, turns white into a fun party look.
  • Avoid: black heavy shoes with a light summer dress; the contrast can look harsh. Sleek black pumps work better with a structured white dress.

Makeup

White reflects light onto your face, so a warm, glowing complexion is the goal. Add bronzer and a peachy or rosy blush, so you do not look washed out. On the eyes, soft bronze, champagne or a fine liner; on the lips, coral, rose or a classic red for drama. Avoid bronzer or self-tan that has not set before you dress, as it can mark the fabric.

Jewellery

Gold is the most flattering partner for white and cream: hoops, layered chains or chunky earrings. Pearls give a refined look for graduations and civil ceremonies. Silver works best with pure, cool white.

Bag and colour accents

Use accessories to add personality: a straw or woven bag for summer, a gold clutch for evening, or a coloured bag that matches your shoes. A coloured belt, scarf or bold earrings are easy ways to bring in a second shade.

Avoiding see-through problems

  • Check the dress in daylight and with a camera flash before the event.
  • Choose skin-tone underwear, not white, which shows more under light fabrics.
  • Look for fully lined styles or wear a slip under chiffon and lace.
  • Choose a size that is not too tight; fabric stretched over the body becomes more transparent. Use the size guide on the product page and size up if you are between two sizes.

Complete looks

  • Graduation: a white midi dress, nude slingbacks, pearl studs and a soft rose lip.
  • Summer party: a cream mini, fuchsia sandals, gold hoops and a woven clutch.
  • Civil ceremony: a satin white midi, gold strappy sandals, a low bun and a classic red lip.
