What to Wear to a Wedding: A Guest's Guide to Dress Codes

Black tie, cocktail or garden party? How to decode the invitation and choose a wedding guest dress that feels right.

A wedding invitation often comes with a dress code, and it is not always obvious what it means. Here is how to read it, and how to pick a dress that is elegant without upstaging the couple.

Black tie

Black tie is the most formal dress code you are likely to see. Choose a floor-length evening gown in a rich fabric such as satin, velvet or sequins. A maxi dress is the safest choice; an elegant, very polished midi can work at some black-tie events, but long is always right.

Formal or black tie optional

You have more freedom here. A long dress is still ideal, but a sophisticated midi dress or a sleek tailored look is perfectly appropriate. Think structured fabrics, beautiful details and refined jewellery.

Cocktail

Cocktail attire means a dress that ends around the knee or mid-calf. A fitted midi, a chic mini dress with sleeves, or a coordinated two-piece set are all good options. This is also where you can have fun with colour and texture.

Garden party, beach or casual

Lighter fabrics, floral prints and flowing silhouettes suit outdoor weddings. Avoid long trains that drag across grass or sand, and choose shoes you can walk in.

Colours to avoid

  • White, ivory and cream belong to the bride, unless the couple specifically asks guests to wear white.
  • Black is widely accepted today, especially for evening weddings, but some families still see it as a colour for mourning. If in doubt, choose navy, emerald or burgundy instead.
  • The bridesmaids' colour: if you know it, avoid matching them.

Religious and cultural ceremonies

For a ceremony in a church, mosque or temple, cover your shoulders and choose a longer hemline. A modest dress with sleeves, or a shawl over a strapless dress, keeps you comfortable from the ceremony to the party.

A final tip

When you are unsure, it is better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed. A well-fitted dress in a jewel tone is a choice you will never regret. Check the size guide on each product before you order, and order in good time before the wedding.
