How to Style a Sequin Dress (Without Overdoing It)

A sequin dress does most of the work for you. Here is how to choose the right one and finish the look with shoes, accessories, hair and makeup.

Few things feel as celebratory as a sequin dress. It catches the light, looks incredible in photos and instantly says "party". The trick is knowing when to stop: sequins are the star, and everything else should support them.

Choose the right sequin dress for the occasion

Think about where you are going before you think about the sparkle.

  • Prom, galas and black tie: a floor-length sequin gown or a sequin-embellished maxi dress feels suitably grand.
  • Cocktail parties and birthdays: a midi or mini in all-over sequins is fun and easy to move in.
  • Weddings: as a guest, choose subtle sequin detailing or a tonal shimmer rather than head-to-toe silver, so you do not compete with the bride. Our wedding guest dress code guide has more on this.

Shoes

Keep shoes simple. Strappy sandals, nude or metallic heels and sleek pointed pumps all work. If the dress is short and very sparkly, a plain black or skin-tone shoe keeps the look polished. If you will be dancing all night, a block heel or an elegant flat is a smart choice.

Jewellery: keep it minimal

Sequins are already an accessory. Pick one focal point: small studs or drop earrings with a high neckline, or a fine pendant with a V-neck. Skip chunky necklaces that clash with the embellishment and can snag on the sequins. A single cocktail ring or a slim bracelet is usually enough.

Bags and outerwear

A small satin or leather clutch looks cleaner than another sparkly bag. For cooler evenings, a tailored blazer, a long wool coat or a faux-fur stole all complement sequins. Avoid rough knits and anything with Velcro or hooks, which can pull threads.

Hair and makeup

Let the dress shine and keep beauty soft and polished: glowing skin, a defined eye or a classic red lip, but rarely all three. A sleek bun or low ponytail shows off the neckline, while loose waves add softness to a structured sequin bodice.

From day to night

Want to wear sequins before sunset? Try a sequin skirt or a two-piece set with a plain knit or shirt, flat boots or loafers, and a trench coat. In the evening, swap to heels, add earrings and a clutch.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing sequins with other heavy embellishment, like beaded bags and statement necklaces.
  • Choosing a size too small: sequined fabric has little stretch, so check the size guide on the product page and size up if you are between sizes.
  • Forgetting comfort: try the dress sitting down, since some sequins can feel scratchy at the underarms.
