How to Style a Mini Dress for a Party or Night Out

A mini dress is fun, flirty and easy to dance in. Here is how to style it with shoes, tights, makeup and accessories so it looks elegant, not overdone.

The mini dress is the ultimate party piece. Short hemlines show off your legs and your shoes, so the styling decides whether the look feels chic or chaotic. The golden rule: if you show leg, balance it elsewhere, with longer sleeves, a higher neckline or a simple silhouette.

Shoes

  • Heels: pointed pumps or strappy sandals lengthen the leg and suit cocktail parties and birthdays.
  • Boots: knee-high or sock boots make a mini feel modern and are ideal in autumn and winter.
  • Platforms: a 70s-inspired platform sandal gives height and comfort for dancing.
  • Avoid: very high, very strappy shoes with a very short, very tight dress. Pick one statement.

Tights

Sheer black tights instantly make a mini more elegant and are a smart choice for colder evenings. Skin-tone sheer tights give a smooth finish without looking wintry. Patterned or glitter tights can be fun for New Year's Eve, but keep the dress and shoes simple.

Makeup

A mini dress suits playful makeup: a graphic liner, shimmering lids or a glossy lip. For a sophisticated finish, choose a fresh base, a little bronzer and either a cat-eye or a bold lip. Avoid stacking glitter eyes, bright lips and heavy contour all at once.

Jewellery and bag

With a high neck or long sleeves, choose bold earrings and stacked rings. With a strappy or plunging mini, a fine necklace or a chain layered at different lengths looks effortless. A small shoulder bag on a chain or a compact clutch keeps your hands free for dancing.

Outerwear

An oversized blazer is the easiest way to dress a mini for any venue. A longer coat, such as a tailored wool coat or a trench that covers the hem, creates a stylish, balanced silhouette. For party season, a cropped faux-fur jacket adds glamour.

Keeping it elegant

  • Check the fit sitting and moving: a mini should not ride up when you sit down. Use the size guide on the product page and size up if you are between sizes.
  • Balance proportions: short and fitted with a covered top, or short and flowing with a lower neckline.
  • Choose quality fabrics like satin, crepe and sequins for evening.

Complete looks

  • Birthday party: a satin mini, strappy sandals, a gold chain necklace and a glossy lip.
  • New Year's Eve: a sequin mini, sheer black tights, ankle boots and a cat-eye. More ideas in our NYE guide.
  • Dinner and drinks: a black blazer dress, pointed pumps and statement earrings.
