How to Choose a Prom Dress You Will Love

Silhouette, colour, length and fit: everything to think about before you pick your prom dress, and when to order it.

Prom is one of the few nights where a full-length gown, sequins and a dramatic silhouette all feel exactly right. With so many styles to choose from, it helps to narrow things down before you start scrolling. These are the questions we ask our own customers.

1. Start with the silhouette

The cut of a dress matters more than the colour or the details, because it decides how the dress sits on your body.

  • Bodycon and mermaid dresses follow your curves and flare at the knee or hem. They look striking on an hourglass figure and on anyone who wants to show off their shape.
  • A-line and ball gowns are fitted at the waist and open up below it. They balance wider hips and suit almost every body type.
  • Column and sheath dresses fall straight. They lengthen a petite frame, especially with a high slit.
  • Strapless and corset bodices define the waist and give structure; a halter or one-shoulder neckline draws attention to the shoulders.

2. Pick a colour that works with your skin tone

Look at the veins on your wrist. If they look blue or purple, you probably have a cool undertone: emerald, sapphire, silver, berry and icy pastels will flatter you. Green-looking veins suggest a warm undertone, which glows in gold, champagne, rust, coral and olive. If you cannot tell, you are likely neutral and can wear almost anything. Black, red and deep navy work for everyone.

3. Choose the right length

A floor-length maxi dress is the classic prom choice and photographs beautifully. A midi or mini dress is easier to dance in and is perfect for the after-party. If you plan to wear high heels, try the dress with the shoes you will wear, so the hem just skims the floor.

4. Get the fit right

Measure your bust, waist and hips before you order and compare them with the size guide on each product page. If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger one: it is much easier to take a dress in than to let it out. Our guide on how to measure yourself for a dress walks you through it.

5. Order early

Allow time for delivery and for any alterations. Ordering four to six weeks before prom leaves room to try the dress on with your shoes and accessories, and to make small adjustments without stress.

6. Finish the look

Let one element be the star. A heavily embellished or sequin dress needs only simple jewellery, while a plain satin gown can take statement earrings or a bold clutch. Keep the hairstyle in mind too: an open back or a high neckline looks best with hair worn up.
